Best Ideas

At the end of the event, faculty members in attendance were asked to contribute what they thought was the best idea presented during the Faculty Planning Workshop. The complied ideas are:

- Centralized facility for materials characterization (4 people)

- Hire a PR firm (2 people)

- Seek collaboration with biology departments

- Physical space for collaboration between Engineering & Applied Physical Sciences and fundamental biology in new space (addition to YUH).

- Cross-disciplinary research focused on union among biology, materials and physics. Have Yale Engineering be known for strong fundamental x-disciplinary work.

- New building: Use for engineering and physics soft condensed matter on biological sciences, though consider to what price dividing departments may be harmful

- Focusing of interdisciplinary activities: Life science + engineering; energy + engineering

- Energy in engineering

- Lower per-grad student cost

- Getting rid of departments/renaming departments to better match research discipline

- Working groups to define initiatives

- Changing image of Yale Education

- Industrial Liaison/Product Design Center

- To increase visibility, have a centralized conference center/lecture hall building with general meeting spaces/coffee shop/atrium on Yale Central Campus

- Establishing Yale as a player in Engineering & Applied Science – similar to Harvard

- New building as the “technical commons” that uses a centralized facility to build inter-disciplinary links to Science Hill and the rest of the campus

- Centers of state-of-the-art shared instrumentation and associated staff

- West Campus as Yale’s National Lab

- Define 3-5 key focal (interdisciplinary) areas around which Yale Engineering will grow/improve

- To have a School of Engineering with autonomy

- General Engineering B.A. with foreign study component

- “Bell Labs” for sustainability at West Campus

- Maximize the new footprint of the new building
