I received the BSEE from the Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, and the PhD degree in Electrical Engineering from Columbia University, New York. My engineering career started at Bell Telephone Laboratories where I investigated efficient speech coding techniques. Then as a postdoctoral research associate in the Department of Electrical Engineering, Columbia University, I applied digital signal processing to diagnostic ultrasound signals to characterize liver disease.
